Every once in a while, a game comes along that you just can’t get out of your head. Broken Reality is it for me. I stumbled upon the Kickstarter campaign while scrolling through my Twitter feed. The nostalgia for the old ways of the internet kicked in right away. I mean, look at this game. There are dogs! And pop-up ads! And viruses!
What is Broken Reality?
The Broken Reality world is described as a “3D parody of the internet.” It’s a hilarious, single-player adventure game set in a virtual world. Your goal is to increase your social status by solving puzzles, “liking” content, buying a bunch of junk, and taking sweet photos of your journey. You know, the life of an average Millennial.
What’s so great about it?
The short Broken Reality demo is a breath of fresh air. It never takes itself seriously, choosing instead to poke fun at the world we live in. After putting yourself into thousands of dollars worth of virtual debt buying cool stuff like hats and Cherry Coke, the game hints that “the best things in life are free.” Wait, what? But I got so much social cred for buying all the sweet sunglasses!
The demo made me smile so hard that my face hurt the rest of the day. There are endless Easter eggs and new things to discover. I’ve played the entire demo twice and still haven’t found everything there is to find. I imagine that the full release will have even more replayability.
When will it be available?
The Kickstarter was successfully funded in early January, and the full game is expected to be released in September 2018. The free demo I played is available here.
